{"id":18,"date":"2018-05-16T18:36:31","date_gmt":"2018-05-16T17:36:31","guid":{"rendered":"\/?page_id=18"},"modified":"2018-05-16T18:36:31","modified_gmt":"2018-05-16T17:36:31","slug":"the-argument-against-tobacco","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/smokingoutthetruth.com\/the-paper\/the-argument-against-tobacco\/","title":{"rendered":"The argument against tobacco"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The case against the tobacco industry includes, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/factsheets\/fs339\/en\/\">WHO<\/a>, that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death and disease globally<\/li>\n<li>A billion people will die from smoking over the next century<\/li>\n<li>Tobacco kills up to half of its users (sometimes <a href=\"http:\/\/download.springer.com\/static\/pdf\/472\/art%253A10.1186%252Fs12916-015-0281-z.pdf?originUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fbmcmedicine.biomedcentral.com%2Farticle%2F10.1186%2Fs12916-015-0281-z&amp;token2=exp=1473241158~acl=%2Fstatic%2Fpdf%2F472%2Fart%25253A10.1186%25252Fs12916-015-0281-z.pdf*~hmac=f6684ce28c0d631f4fa866b56f896cac09cc0c2f4453df18f871b3fabc5311cc\">two-thirds<\/a> of smokers)<\/li>\n<li>There is no safe level of exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke<\/li>\n<li>Smoking imposes a cost on society<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition it is widely reported that \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/tobacco\/data_statistics\/fact_sheets\/fast_facts\/\">many adult cigarette smokers want to quit<\/a>\u201d although success in quitting is low because cigarettes &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/publications\/drugfacts\/cigarettes-other-tobacco-products\">contain the addictive drug nicotine<\/a>&#8220;. Indeed it has been reported that \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/articles.chicagotribune.com\/1988-05-17\/news\/8803170666_1_addictive-as-cocaine-nicotine-koop\">nicotine is as addictive as cocaine<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It is further argued that the industry has a <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/is-big-tobacco-abandoning-smokes-for-e-cigarettes-28328\">long and chequered history<\/a> and so nothing it says today can be trusted. It has sought to work against regulation of the industry. Tar and nicotine levels have been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1759375\/pdf\/v003p00362.pdf\">manipulated<\/a>.
